Policy

Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation works to change systems and structures to create conditions through which everyone can achieve their optimal oral health by supporting public policies that advance oral health equity.

We engage individuals and communities experiencing oral health inequities and disparities to help identify and understand root causes of structural and systemic barriers to achieving optimal oral health and to help inform policy issues and strategies to address them.

Our mission is to elevate the well-being of all Coloradans by advancing oral health equity.

WHAT IS ORAL HEALTH EQUITY?

Achieving oral health equity means that every person can have a healthy mouth, regardless of life circumstances.

Policies We Support and Why

The Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation supports public policies that advance and promote equity and reduce disparities, particularly for populations that are historically overlooked.

We work to ensure optimal oral health is not compromised due any social determinant of health, including but not limited to, racism, stigma, lack of access to care, geographic location, access to clean, safe and optimally fluoridated water, income, food insecurity, nutrition, housing and housing insecurity, access to a healthy lifestyle, transportation, and education.

Policies that acknowledge intersectionality, increase access to care, prioritize prevention and strengthen the understanding of the connection of oral health to overall health for all ages will be the highest priority.

Policy Principles

Systems change
Identify and advance strategies, systems, and policies that enhance and support oral health by leveraging systems in and outside of oral health.
Social determinants of health
Promote and advance intersectionality and the oral health needs of communities at highest risk for oral health inequities.
Coverage and financing
Oral health care is essential health care. Include oral health as integral, rather than a separate, component of health, health care, and coverage. Oral health coverage and services are affordable, especially among the populations with the most to gain.
