New MMH Family Dental keeps dental hygiene close to home

MMH Family Dental is open in the Family Practice of Holyoke, and patients started seeing the new hygienist, Arika Luedke, Oct. 24.
Finding ways to provide dental services has long been a goal of Melissa Memorial Hospital. For a time, that was achieved through a dentist periodically working at MMH specialty clinics. The recent opening of the full-time dental clinic, however, was made possible by a $185,000 grant received from Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation earlier this year.
At the moment, there is no dentist on staff. As a hygienist, Luedke can provide such things as exams, X-rays, cleanings, deep cleanings, dental sealants and fluoride treatments. For restorative treatment — fillings, crowns, dentures and the like — the clinic is working on a referral basis, sending patients to nearby dentists for now. The goal is to have a full-time dentist on-site within the next year, though.
As with many MMH goals, the dental clinic is intended to provide needed services locally so that people don’t have to travel out of town. As Luedke put it, she and other MMH staff are looking forward to building a dental home for people right here in Holyoke. Even for those not currently in need of restorative treatment, cleanings are recommended once or twice a year in order to stay on top of oral hygiene.
